"We do think at this point the speculative funds have gone long on a net basis after they had been short for several weeks - it's primarily based on technicals," said Sharon Johnson of Frank Schneider and Co Inc. The market was awaiting Thursday's USDA cotton export figures to see if there has been any sizeable increase. "I am expecting 50,000 to 75,000 bales. I am not expecting any bullish surprises," Johnson said. A report that the International Cotton Advisory Committee lowered its forecast for China 1996/97 cotton production to 3.7 million tonnes from 4.1 million tonnes appeared to have little impact on the market. December cotton settled 0.65 cent lower at 76.11 cents per pound, traded 76.75 to 75.40 cents. Spot October went out 0.54 cent weaker at 75.31 cents.
