The contract closed off 0.38 at 73.02 after trading from 73.20 to 72.75. October ended down 0.48 at 72.52, while the back months finished 0.10 firmer to 0.63 weaker. Volume was slim at an estimated 4,000 lots. Besides a bearish outlook which includes a strong U.S. crop, weak exports and surging imports, a report that Pakistan may grow a record crop this year added pressure to prices. The report out of Pakistan said output could reach more than 12 million bales, with three million bales for export. The longer term forecast also points to lower prices. Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc, noted a decline overnight in the A-index, the average of the five cheapest world quotes. The quote out of Memphis, meantime, increased. "This says additional cotton is available for export and at cheaper prices," Johnson said. "If (U.S. cotton) is going to be competitive, we have to drop the price." But analysts said the close above support today, coupled with a strong weekly export report Thursday, could strengthen the market in the near term. 221137 MET aug 96
