Some sources attributed today's gains to a mildly bullish export sales report of 96,600 for the week ended August 15. But 33,000 bales of the total number were shipped to Romania, a country which only bought 54,000 bales last year, said Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc. "You take that out and all of a sudden the numbers don't look quite so healthy," Johnson said. The December contract closed 0.43 higher at 73.45, having ranged from 73.58 to 72.85. October ended up 0.41 at 72.93, while the deferred contracts finished unchanged to 0.48 firmer. Volume was estimated at 4,000 lots.
