The most active December contract finished 2.31 firmer at 76.76, having ranged from 76.80 to 74.40. October ended up 2.06 at 75.85, while the back months closed 2.17 lower to 0.55 higher. Volume was estimated at a brisk 18,000 lots. Market sources agree that players may be overreacting to the hurricane as it is not likely to threaten the cotton belt. The storm is heading north of the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean and moving west-northwest at 15 mph (24 kmh). It will remain in open waters for the next three to four days. "It is simply too early to predict whether this storm will make landfall along the East Coast," said Smith Barney meteorologist Jon Davis. Still, players braced for the worst. "At this point everyone is just being cautions," said Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc. "I don't see any other reason the market should be up."
