LME base metals limp sideways, in seasonal slump
LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuter) - Base metal markets limped sideways
in another lacklustre session on the London Metal Exchange (LME)
on Wednesday as the seasonal slowdown in physical business
continued to dampen trade.
"Once again it's been pretty dire this morning," said one
floor trader.
Dealers said they were awaiting the Securities and
Investment Board's (SIB) consultative paper due for release at
1300 GMT on Thursday.
"It will be interesting to see what it shows up," said one.
Copper prices edged lower but held support, slightly
depressed by cash sales towards the end of the official morning
ring. But the sales were well absorbed and nearby spreads
remained tight.
Three month futures ended the morning session at $1,925 a
tonne against $1,927 at Tuesday's afternoon kerb close. Prices
are entrenched in a narrow range between $1,905 and $1,970.
Aluminium was little changed, edging up $0.50 to to $1,515
by the end of the session. Prices traded in a narrow $1,514/16
range all day and traders could see no reason for recent bands
to be broken while interest was at such a low ebb.
Nickel dipped, nudging below first support at $7,090 at one
stage before climbing back above the level.
Despite weak short term fundamental factors, traders said
the big losses in nickel during the second quarter of the year
had been overdone, and more covering was needed to the upside.
Last morning kerb business was at $7,110 from $7,130.
Tin and zinc moved sideways, although chart patterns on both
markets pointed to more significant moves soon.
Converging short term support and resistance trendlines for
both markets signalled a break-out of recent ranges, although it
was unclear which direction either market was most likely to
break, chartists said.
Zinc was last indicated at $1,037/38 from $1,037 and tin
moved to $6,175 from $6,160.
Lead was supported by nearby tightness, with three month
prices last at $827, unchanged.
Alloy was ignored, last indicated at $1,305/10 from $1,300.
