The contract closed 0.45 lower at 73.95, having ranged from 74.60 to 73.65. October ended off 0.38 to 73.47, while the back months finished 1.05 to 0.11 lower. Volume was estimated at 9,000 lots. Analysts put the next level of support in a gap between Monday's high of 73.88, and today's low of 73.65 basis the December contract. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's weekly export report buoyed prices in early dealings, but the news was not enough to sustain gains. "We're still running considerably behind a year ago (export) levels," said O.A. Cleveland, a cotton marketing specialist with Mississippi State University. He said the USDA target of 6.6 million bales could be difficult to reach, particularly in the face of near-record foreign production. "That suggests our export potential is not as great as it has been in the past," Cleveland said. On the upside, December will meet resistance at its recent high of 75.38 and then at 75.65, the high made June 28. 190949 MET aug 96
