Prices have given up nearly all of the gains made in a speculative rally Monday, which carried December to a high of 75.38. The move was prompted by a U.S. Department of Agriculture report, which put the 1996/97 crop slightly below market expectations. But market sources expect prices to fall further in the face of the supply and demand picture. Domestic consumption remains slack while exports are still weak overall despite Thursday's USDA report showing hefty sales. Most analysts are skeptical that the U.S. can meet the USDA's target of 6.6 million bales for the 1996/97 season given high U.S. prices compared with foreign growths. The December contract closed 0.91 lower at 73.04, having ranged from 74.10 to 73.00, where resistance is seen. October ended off 0.75 to 72.72, while the back months finished 1.20 to 0.15 lower. 191210 MET aug 96
