After closing up the 3.00-cent limit Monday, dealers said the market had not entirely digested USDA's production estimate for the 1996/97 crop released Monday morning. The government's production figures for that crop came in at 18.577 million bales, compared with industry expectations ranging between 18.76 million bales and 19.7 million bales. December cotton settled up 1.28 cents at 75.16 cents a lb, its highest level since June 24, after ranging from 75.38 to 74.10. October ended 1.50 higher at 74.75, while the back months finished 1.12 higher to 0.23 lower. But market sources said persistant trade selling between 95.00 and 96.00 cents in the active December delivery limited today's gains, and the market's upside potential may have been sated for the time being. "Yesterday's report sparked a little panic buying, but not the kind of panic needed to sustain a rally," said Calcot Ltd. analyst Jarral Neeper. He added that competitively priced foreign cotton and weak exports offset some of the bullish sentiment. Prudential Securities cotton specialist Ernest Simon agreed. "At these prices there is not a chance to sell cotton," he said. "Prices would have to fall to the mid-to-upper 60.00s to attract buyers. Volume was heavy at an estimated 16,000 lots. 141121 MET aug 96
