The December contract opened up the 3.00-cent limit and the back months followed suite. Trade selling on the re-open nudged the contracts off the highs, but prices climbed in the afternoon and remained 3.00 cents firmer across the board. One options trader noted a flurry of put selling in December, at 74.70. "We've only seen put selling because the big merchants are not as panicked as the commission houses, which are short and bidding up futures," he said. Futures could trade sharply higher to the limit up on Tuesday, he said, pegging December resistance at 76.00. Several market sources described today's activity as a temporary reaction to the USDA's bullish number. They said the market cannot sustain these high prices in the face of slack export demand. The December contract rose 3.00 on the day to close at 73.88, having ranged narrowly from 73.88 to 73.10. October also ended up 3.00 to 73.25, while the back months finished 3.00 to 0.90 higher. Volume was estimated at 9,000 lots. The USDA put the 1996/97 crop at 18.577 million bales, compared with 19.0 million bales in July. Expectations ranged from 18.76 million bales to 19.7 million bales. The USDA also dropped ending stocks to 4.0 million bales from 4.4 million bales, and kept exports at 6.6 million bales. 131142 MET aug 96
