LONDON (DOW JONES)--ZINC PRICES ARE LOWER IN PRE-MARKET TRADING MONDAY ON THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE HAVING SHED $20 A METRIC TON TO BREAK BELOW CHART SUPPORT AT $1,140. TRADERS SAID THE MOVE WAS DRIVEN BY LONG LIQUIDATION, TRIGGERED BY A WEAKER-THAN-EXPECTED CLOSE FRIDAY. THE OTHER METALS ARE STEADY TO LOWER IN LIGHT VOLUME. (LME THREE-MONTHS PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1120GMT, WITH FRIDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. FRIDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS A POUND.) COPPER 1,777 (1,777.75) ZINC 1,121 (1,135.50) ALUMINUM 1,540 (1,544.50) TIN 5,330 (5,315) NICKEL 5,950 (5,957.50) LEAD 543 (553) NYMEX MAR. COPPER 81.00 TRADERS SAID ZINC'S FAILURE TO CHALLENGE LAST WEEK'S HIGH OF $1,175 HAD ENCOURAGED PROFIT-TAKING. "IT'S A TECHNICAL MOVE ON ZINC, THE NEXT SUPPORT IS $1,120, ALTHOUGH THAT LOOKS TO BE HOLDING," SAID A TRADER FOR A GERMAN-OWNED TRADE HOUSE. THE OTHER METALS ARE DRIFTING IN TIGHT TRADING RANGES AFTER LAST WEEK'S DOWNWARD CORRECTION ON PROFIT-TAKING. BUT IN COPPER, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT TIN, THERE REMAINS UPSIDE RISK, GIVEN THE SIZE OF SHORT POSITIONS HELD BY HEDGE FUNDS. "THERE'S STILL TIME TO SEE SOME MAJOR PROFIT TAKING IN COPPER BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR AND THAT COULD TRIGGER QUITE A BOUNCE," SAID A TRADER FOR A BELGIAN-OWNED BROKERAGE. UNDERLYING SENTIMENT REMAINS BEARISH, WITH CONCERN OVER SLOWING ASIAN DEMAND APPEARING TO ESCALATE. ANALYSTS AT MACQUARIE EQUITIES LTD., JUST BACK FROM A TOUR OF ASIA, SAID IN A REPORT MONDAY: "FOLLOWING OUR VISITS (TO ASIAN METAL PRODUCERS, CONSUMERS AND TRADERS) WE HAVE BECOME MORE NEGATIVE ABOUT THE DEMAND OUTLOOK FOR 1998 AND WE BELIEVE THAT THE MARKET GENERALLY REMAINS FAR TOO OPTIMISTIC." MACQUARIE RECOMMENDED A DOWNWARD REVISION OF ASIAN DEMAND GROWTH FOR THE "MAIN METALS" TO -3% TO -5% FOR 1998, FROM A PREVIOUS PROJECTION OF 0 TO -1%. 221456 MET dec 97
