LONDON (DOW JONES)--COPPER AND ALUMINUM PRICES AT THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE RALLIED BRIEFLY ON SPECULATIVE BUYING IN PRE-MARKET TRADING FRIDAY AFTER DAILY LME WAREHOUSE STOCK DATA SHOWED SHARP DECLINES IN BOTH COPPER AND ALUMINUM, SAID TRADERS. 'WE SAW SOME COMMISSION HOUSE BUYING OF COPPER AND ALUMINUM A BIT BEFORE AND AFTER THE STOCK DECLINE,' SAID A TRADER FROM A EUROPEAN TRADE HOUSE. 'ZINC WAS ALSO UP A BIT BUT IT'S STILL RANGE-BOUND,' HE SAID. A 3,625 METRIC TON DECLINE IN COPPER STOCKS TRIGGERED A BRIEF $10 SURGE IN PRICES DURING PRE-MARKET TRADING, WITH THREE-MONTH COPPER BREAKING THROUGH RESISTANCE AT $1,900 TO A PEAK OF $1,902.50 BEFORE RETREATING TO $1,895, SAID TRADERS. THEY ATTRIBUTED THE DECLINE TO CHINESE BUYING BECAUSE THE BULK OF THE DRAW DOWN OCCURRED IN SINGAPORE. (LME THREE-MONTHS PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1045 GMT, WITH THURSDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. NYMEX WAS CLOSED FOR THE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY THURSDAY.) COPPER 1,897.50 (1,887.50) ZINC 1,183.50 (1,177.50) ALUMINUM 1,614.50 (1,607.50) TIN 5,730 (5,730) NICKEL 6,320 (6,275) LEAD 558.00 (558.50) THE NEARBY SPREADS ON ALUMINUM TIGHTENED FURTHER FRIDAY, WITH JAN/FEB MOVING TO A $1 BACKWARDATION, TRADERS NOTED. 'WE'RE SEEING DEMAND FROM MANY AREAS FOR DECEMBER THROUGH TO MARCH,' SAID THE TRADER FROM A EUROPEAN TRADE HOUSE. AFTER SIX WEEKS OF DECLINING STOCKS AND PRICES, ALUMINUM IS NOW POISED TO GO HIGHER BECAUSE GOOD CONSUMER SUPPORT HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED AT THE LOW $1,600S, SAID ANOTHER TRADER FROM A EUROPEAN TRADE HOUSE. KEY RESISTANCE IS PEGGED AT $1,700. ALUMINUM STOCKS WERE DOWN 3,375 TONS TO 672,100 TONS FRIDAY AND ARE OVER 10% LOWER THIS MONTH, LARGELY DUE TO GOOD PHYSICAL DEMAND FROM THE U.S., TRADERS NOTED. ZINC, MEANWHILE, WAS A FEW DOLLARS HIGHER IN PRE-MARKET TRADING AFTER LME WAREHOUSE STOCKS SHOWED A 2,325 TON DECLINE TO 495,525 TONS. 281504 MET nov 97
