LONDON (DOW JONES)--AFTER TUMBLING TO A FRESH 16-MONTH LOW OF $1,782.50 A METRIC TON, COPPER PRICES AT THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE BOUNCED BACK ABOVE $1,800 ON LIGHT TRADE AND CONSUMER BUYING, SAID TRADERS THURSDAY. NICKEL AND ZINC WERE ALSO HIGHER, FOLLOWING COPPER'S LEAD. 'THERE WERE SOME SCALE-DOWN BUY ORDERS FROM THE FAR EAST ON THE WAY DOWN AND SOME TRADE BUYING TOO, SO PRICES BOUNCED HIGHER AGAIN,' SAID A TRADER FROM A GERMAN TRADE HOUSE. (LME THREE-MONTHS PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1104GMT, WITH WEDNESDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. WEDNESDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS A POUND.) COPPER 1,803.00 (1,808.50) ZINC 1,120 (1,118.50) ALUMINUM 1,590.50 (1,586.50) TIN 5,670 (5,662.50) NICKEL 6,010 (5,972.50) LEAD 549.00 (542.50) NYMEX MAR COPPER 80.85 (81.85) COPPER IS EXPECTED TO CONSOLIDATE BETWEEN $1,780 AND $1,820 IN THE NEAR TERM, BUT TRADERS DON'T RULE OUT THE POSSIBILITY OF A FURTHER DECLINE. 'IF IT CAN STAY AROUND THESE LEVELS THEN IT MAY TRY AND EDGE HIGHER BUT I SUSPECT THERE ARE SOME RING-STOPS BELOW $1,780 WHICH THE SPECS (SPECULATORS) MAY TRY AND TEST,' SAID ANOTHER TRADER FROM A GERMAN TRADE HOUSE. NICKEL PRICES RALLIED $80 IN EARLY PRE-MARKET TRADING THURSDAY BUT SLIPPED BACK AGAIN TOWARD $6,000 AFTER RUNNING INTO SPECULATIVE SELLING AROUND $6,020, SAID TRADERS. BY CONTRAST, ZINC PRICES CONTINUED TO EDGE HIGHER AFTER DIPPING LOWER IN ASIAN TRADING, BREAKING ABOVE A CHART RESISTANCE AT $1,120. ALUMINUM PRICES WERE STEADY, UNDERPINNED BY ANOTHER 2,000 TO 3,000 TON FALL IN DAILY LME WAREHOUSE STOCKS. ALUMINUM PRICES HAVE MANAGED TO BUCK THE BEAR TREND OF OTHER BASE METALS IN RECENT WEEKS BECAUSE OF THE CONTINUED DECLINE IN LME STOCKS. 'PEOPLE HAD EXPECTED ALUMINUM STOCKS TO BE DRAWN DOWN IN DECEMBER TO AROUND 600,000 TONS BY THE END OF THE YEAR,' ONE TRADER NOTED. ALUMINUM STOCKS WERE AT 660,600 TONS THURSDAY. 041550 MET dec 97
