LONDON (DOW JONES)--NICKEL PRICES ARE LANGUISHING BELOW $6,000 A METRIC TON IN PRE MARKET TRADING WEDNESDAY ON THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE, ALTHOUGH TRADE BUYING HAS LIFTED THEM OFF A FRESH THREE-AND-A-HALF-YEAR LOW AT $5,895 A METRIC TON, TOUCHED AROUND 0900 GMT. THE OTHER METALS ARE NARROWLY HIGHER IN SLUGGISH TRADING, WITH THE COMPLEX APPEARING TO TAKE A BREATHER AFTER TWO DAYS OF AGGRESSIVE FUND- LED SELLING, DEALERS SAID. (LME THREE-MONTHS PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1122GMT, WITH TUESDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. TUESDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS A POUND.) COPPER 1,838 (1,823) ZINC 1,138 (1,134) ALUMINUM 1,595 (1,592) TIN 5,680 (5,675) NICKEL 5,965 (6,015) LEAD 540 (530) NYMEX DEC. COPPER 81.50 'NICKEL'S BOUNCED BUT IT'S NOT CONVINCING. YESTERDAY'S (TUESDAY) MOVE BELOW $6,000 HAS REALLY HIT SENTIMENT,' SAID A TRADER FOR A GERMAN TRADEHOUSE. NICKEL'S SLIDE TUESDAY WAS ESSENTIALLY TECHNICAL, ACCORDING TO ANALYSTS, AND WAS EXACERBATED BY THE TRIGGERING OF STOP-LOSS SELL ORDERS BELOW $6,100. BUT FUNDAMENTALS ARE ALSO PLAYING A ROLE: FALLING STAINLESS STEEL PRICES, PARTICULARLY IN ASIA, MEAN CUTBACKS IN STEEL PRODUCTION ARE LIKELY IN THE NEAR TERM. ABOUT 60% OF NICKEL IS USED AS AN ALLOY IN STAINLESS STEEL, SO LOWER STAINLESS STEEL OUTPUT MEANS LOWER NICKEL CONSUMPTION. COPPER IS EDGING HIGHER AND CHALLENGING TUESDAY'S HIGHS BUT IS SEEN DRAWING FRESH SPECULATIVE SELLING AT $1,840, DEALERS SAID. ALUMINUM IS DRIFTING JUST BELOW $1,600 IN THIN VOLUME, WITH ANOTHER BIG DRAW DOWN IN LME INVENTORIES FAILING TO INJECT FRESH IMPETUS. 031526 MET dec 97
