LONDON (DOW JONES)--BASE METALS PRICES ARE HIGHER IN PRE-MARKET TRADING WEDNESDAY ON THE LONDON METAL EXCHANGE ON CHART-BASED SHORT COVERING, DEALERS SAID. COPPER HAS BOUNCED AROUND $30 A METRIC TON FROM TUESDAY'S KERB CLOSE, ALTHOUGH IT COULDN'T MAINTAIN AN EARLY CHALLENGE OF RESISTANCE AT $1,780. ALUMINUM IS ALSO OFF TUESDAY'S LOWS BUT DEALERS SAID IT LACKED THE IMPETUS NEEDED TO BREAK BACK ABOVE THE KEY $1,550-LEVEL. (LME THREE-MONTHS PRICES IN DOLLARS A METRIC TON AT 1050GMT, WITH TUESDAY'S LATE KERB CLOSE IN PARENTHESES. TUESDAY'S NYMEX COPPER CLOSE IS IN CENTS A POUND.) COPPER 1,773 (1,755.50) ZINC 1,131 (1,122.50) ALUMINUM 1,535 (1,517.50) TIN 5,320 (5,277.50) NICKEL 6,050 (6,017.50) LEAD 540 (534.50) NYMEX MAR. COPPER 79.35 COPPER WAS BUOYED IN ASIAN TRADING BY JAPANESE BUYING ON THE BACK OF YEN STRENGTH AGAINST THE DOLLAR. THEN SENTIMENT WAS HELPED BY A 3,725-TON DECLINE IN LME STOCKS TO 329,650 TONS, ANNOUNCED AT 0900 GMT. THAT BROUGHT THE DECLINE IN LME STOCKS SO FAR THIS WEEK TO 7,900 TONS, WITH WITHDRAWALS FROM SINGAPORE SUGGESTING CHINESE BUYING. 'COPPER AND ALUMINUM ARE STILL VERY FRAGILE,' SAID A TRADER FOR A EUROPEAN BROKERAGE. 'EVERYTHING DEPENDS ON HOW FAR THE FUNDS THINK THEY CAN PUSH THINGS ON THE DOWNSIDE.' FUNDS, ALREADY HEAVILY SHORT OF COPPER, HAVE LIQUIDATED LONG POSITIONS IN ALUMINUM AND GONE SHORT OF THAT MARKET TOO ON THE BACK OF BEARISH PREDICTIONS ABOUT NEAR-TERM ASIAN CONSUMPTION. BUT U.K. COMMODITIES BROKERAGE GERRARD & NATIONAL INTER COMMODITIES LTD. IS PREDICTING A WAVE OF FUND SHORT COVERING. 'THE FUNDS ARE WELL SHORT OF THE BASE METALS AT PRESENT, AND DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THE PRESSURE ON FUND MANAGERS TO BOOK PROFITS BY THE YEAR-END,' GNI SAID WEDNESDAY IN A NOTE TO CLIENTS. '...WE FEEL THAT THERE IS THE REAL RISK OF A BIG SHORT-COVERING RALLY TODAY (WEDNESDAY),' GNI ADDED. 171516 MET dec 97
