But steady mill buying toward the lows stemmed losses and prevented the benchmark December contract from breaching chart support at 71.10-71.00 cents per lb, they said. December cotton ended 0.43 cent lower at 71.22 cents, after ranging from 71.70 to 71.10 cents. The rest of the board ended down 0.47 to up 0.13 cent. Traders said a sharp devaluation of the Pakistan rupee against the U.S. dollar on Wednesday weighed on sentiment. The State Bank of Pakistan slashed the rupee value by eight percent to 44.0500/44.2703 to the dollar from 40.5200/40.7226 fixed on July 11. "It was a major step -- a very big devaluation," said one trader. "And it may promote some exports from Pakistan. It's sure going to make their cotton cheaper on the world market," he added. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's October report, Pakistan is expected to produce 8.0 million 480-lb bales in 1997/98, making it the fourth largest producer in the world behind the U.S., China and India. Pakistan is expected to export 850,000 bales in 1997/98, the USDA said. Technically, traders said after 71.00 cents, December would find support at 70.80 cents, its life-of-contract low. Resistance was seen near 72.10 cents. Traders await the USDA's weekly export figures due on Thursday at 0830 EDT. They expect new sales on the week to come in at some 150,000 to 200,000 bales. "I think the export data will be constructive," said one trader, who forecast new sales of 160,000 bales. "It is significant because it will show bears there's still demand in this market and if the price is at the right levels we're going to do business." 161131 MET oct 97
