The general expectation of continuing price weakness, however, continues to restrict business volumes. More attractive selling rates are for instance anticipated for various Mediterranean cottons. Crop developments in Greece are being closely followed, particularly by spinners in Italy, to where freight costs from Greece are relatively cheap. Syrian prices are also being watched closely, since little cotton is yet believed to have been sold from the origin. In the meantime, selling pressure appears to have increased somewhat from sellers of Central Asian styles but so far the offers in circulation appear to have been found less attractive than those prevailing for West African. The latter (particularly in the higher grades) have found additional buyers of late in Portugal. 091151 MET oct 97
