LME slow at midsession, markets stabilise
LONDON, Aug 11 (Reuter) - Base metal business was generally
thin in Monday LME ring sessions but after showing signs of
drifting prices subsequently stabilised.
Copper and zinc were steady while aluminium arrested a
technical lecline and held at its lows. Other metals were
featureless.
"It has been slow for most of the morning. No surprises in
stocks, and little movement, so far, in the spreads," one trader
said.
Zinc prices remained stable above $1,550 during the rings,
although most interest was seen in spread trading and cash
operations. The market tone was assisted by an 1,125-tonne stock
decline.
Meanwhile, the cash/threes backwardation was at $170/180,
while Sept/one week - when crunch tightness starts - was at $55.
Sept/Oct was at $90, while October was also tight at $81
trading.
Traders said Chinese short positions were the underlying
thread that links the tightness. On Monday, physical traders in
the Far East said China was delaying physical deliveries.
Last morning kerb trade was at $1,533 a tonne, up $6 from
Friday afternoon's kerb.
Copper prices sagged back from early levels near $2,300 after
a 1,700-tonne stock increase, but the market was slow
throughout, and is still seen ranging between $2,270 and $2,330.
Final trade was at $2,295, up $7.
Aluminium relinquished ground, as the market continued to
retrace from last week's $1,775 peaks. LME stocks fell again,
the IPAI reported that June producer inventories rose by 11,000
tonnes, although this had been expected to some extent, traders
said.
Speculative buying kicked in around $1,730, and last trade
this morning was at $1,737, still down $9.
Elsewhere, lead wilted slightly and was $3 easier at $611,
while tin sagged to $5,530, down $75.
Nickel slipped under $7,000, but trade was intermittent, and
final business was at $6,940, down $145. Alloy traded at $1,530,
down $15.
