LME copper recovers from stock rise, zinc strong
LONDON, July 17 (Reuter) - LME copper bounced from five
month lows on Thursday morning despite more big deliveries of
metal into warehouses while zinc surged to fresh highs since
September 1990.
Most other metals got encouragment from the rebound in
copper, with the exception of tin, which sulked near Wednesday's
lows.
Nearby spreads again traded near LME imposed limits as the
market worked its way through two weeks of tightness.
The tom/next spread again traded at a $24 backwardation and
cash/day changed hands at backwardations of $19 and $20.
In early pre-market activity, prices slid to a low of
$2,226, the lowest since February 12 as LME inventories rose by
a further 13,025 tonnes, the bulk of which appeared in the
Singapore warehouse.
But underlying nearby tightness quickly got the upper hand
and prices climbed as traders reckoned that a short-term low had
been seen.
Three months finished the morning kerb at $2,274, up $7 from
Wednesday's afternoon kerb close.
More metal is expected to appear in stocks, as previously
shipped material from the Far East shows up in warehouses and
material is sucked in by the stiff backwardation.
Some traders said a total of 100,000 tonnes were expected to
arrive through mid-August. So far this week, stocks have
increased by 34,225 tonnes.
"We expect another 25,000 to 35,000 tonnes in the next few
days," one floor trader said.
Zinc stocks fell by 1,100 tonnes, helping the market surge
to fresh highs.
Three month prices hit a peak of $1,526, the highest since
September 1990, before profit-taking took the froth off the
rally.
Fundamental tightness and covering by shorts is expected to
continue to fuel the market, despite an overbought condition,
traders said.
"I see a short-term target of $1,550, then we're on the way
to $1,600," one floor trader said.
Tightness manifested itself in the spreads, with the
cash/threes narrowing from a $7/$5 contango on Wednesday evening
to level in morning ring trading.
Renewed interest has also been seen in call options,
helping to push prices up as delta hedging hits the market,
traders said.
Other markets were less active, but several lifted off their
lows as copper recovered.
Tin was the only metal to end in negative territory,
shedding $10 to end the morning at $5,440 after holding in a
tight $20 range.
Traders said the market looked soggy and more losses were
expected, with next support seen at $5,350.
Aluminium lacked initiative, holding within its recent
range, ending the kerb at $1,574, up $4.
The market in recent days has tested both ends of its range
from around $1,545 to $1,600 and seems content to consolidate,
traders said.
Lead came off its lows along with copper, gaining $8 to
$640.
Next resistance is seen at $648 and $655.
Nickel gained $30 to $6,750 after hitting a fresh low of
$6,705, and traders expected more losses.
Alloy rose slightly with the primary market to $1,435 versus
$1,423/28.
