Most metals ended in the plus column, led by zinc marching to fresh seven year highs against a background of intensifying tightness starting in September. Three months zinc touched a fresh high since 1990 of $1,562, then settled at $1,560 at the end of the kerb, a gain of $9. Traders said the autumn squeeze was intensifying as the backwardation flared out by $15 to $35/$40 during ring trading, compared to level earlier this week. The tightness is blamed on short Chinese producers being squeezed by a big European merchant and investment funds. Cash to August was in a small contango but September/threes traded at a $47 backwardation in the first ring. Some traders expected the backwardation to continue expanding in the grip of the squeeze, but others suspected it would turn around suddenly in the near term. "Once the backwardation goes, the price is going to slide. Noone wants to be caught on the wrong side of that," a trader said. Aluminium also firmed, hitting a new two-month high of $1,652, underpinned by continued tightness in August/September and steady drawdowns in LME stocks. The inventories decreased by 3,475 tonnes on Thursday. But it met resistance at the $1,650 level, ending the kerb just off highs but still $4 firmer at $1,646. "Consumers have been reluctant to buy above $1,600 but if they come in aluminium will can go higher," a trader said, pegging $1,670 as the next upside target. The cash/threes contango tightened to $5/$3 by the end of the kerb. Meanwhile Sept/Oct was being lent at $1.5 and October was offered at $2.5 Flagship copper, by contrast, had a rangebound session despite ending $23 firmer at $2,296. "It keeps going to $2,300 and then down to $2,275 and back again. This is getting boring," a trader said, adding that the market was still worried about the nearby spread. Cash/threes backwardation was some $10 narrower at $50/$55 at the end of the kerb as two weeks of tight dates ending Friday drew closer. The other metals were generally dull and little changed. Nickel settled just $10 firmer at $6,790, unable to stay above the $6,800 level despite overnight news of a breakdown in talks between producer Falconbridge Ltd and a union representing 1,400 workers at the Sudbury operations. Lead was $5 softer at $645. Although zinc's strength was helping to underpin lead prices, a 1,800-tonne rise in LME stocks put a damper on the market.
