Copper stalled at the $2,300 level, but was comfortable above the overnight close after paying little heed to a 7,800-tonne jump in stocks. The other markets tended to egde higher, but ranges were compact. "Copper failed at $2,300, but the bias in the spreads was on the borrowing, so that is why it is a bit steadier. There is not much interest, though - it is Friday, and people are cooling down after some busy days at the start of the week," one said. The inventory increase in copper this week has been 42,025 tonnes in reaction to the well-heralded technical squeeze that is exepected to fade in early August. Since the start of the year copper stocks have risen by 56 percent, and now stand at 181,150 tonnes. The cash/threes backwardation continued to contract from the heights near $270 earlier this week as the tight dates fall off the structure. The full spread traded at $120, while nearby prompts remained tight, with cash/one day trading at $20. Last three months trade was at $2,290, up $10 a tonne from Thursday's kerb close. Elsewhere, there was little real action other than flurries of pricing. The 2,550-tonne stock fall was routine for aluminium, which ended at an unchanged $1,579. Zinc gained $4 at $1,515, helped by the 2,850-tonne stock fall, while lead showed some stability after the mid-week sell-off. It was $3 higher at $644. Tin was also attempting to consolidate after this week's falls, and was just $5 off at $5,435. However, nickel was depressed by cash sales, and shed $60 at $6,770.
