Steady fund selling eroded prices and pushed the December contract to a new contract low of 73.40 cents. The trade absorbed some of the selling in the afternoon, and the locals, caught short, covered positions just ahead of the close. While the market remains weak technically, prices could get a boost from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's monthly supply and demand report, set for release Friday at 0830 EDT. "Everybody is desperately waiting for the report tomorrow and hoping that (the production forecast) comes in under 18.0 million bales. The USDA estimated 1997/98 production at 18.5 million bales in its last report. The most-active December contract closed 0.32 cent lower at 74.03 cents per lb, having ranged from 74.20 to 73.40 cents, a new contract low. The rest of the board settled unchanged to 0.35 cent higher. Support in December was pegged at 72.00 cents followed by 70.00 cents. An estimated 24,000 lots changed hands on the day compared with Wednesday's official 9,634 lots. 111047 MET jul 97
