"Turnover has been very thin this morning...looks like the summer is finally setting in," one floor trader said. Apart from aluminium, which edged to a fresh 21-month peak on the pre-market, most metals were content to huddle near last week's closing levels. Three months aluminium touched $1,743 per tonne in modest volume, the strongest since November 1995, as a squeeze centred on the August date kept the market tight. Prices kept to a narrow $6 range, finishing the morning kerb up $2 at $1,741. The cash/threes spread dug deeper into backwardation, ending the morning at $6/$9, about $3 wider than Friday. August/September was steady at a $9 backwardation and August/one week traded at a $4.50 back. The market's bull run is expected to stretch higher, but gains above a short-term target of $1,745/50 may be difficult as profit-taking comes into an overbought market, technical analysts said. More delta hedging by short option grantors, however, could still fuel the run higher, since forward months hold large lumps of open interest above the key $1,700 strike, dealers said. The short-term attention is on Wednesday's options declaration. Zinc spreads held at firm levels as a standoff between the longs and short continued, but turnover was light. Bids entered the ring for spreads based in September, the date when Chinese smelters must deliver metal or roll over positions. September/October was bid around a $75 backwardation and September/one week at a $43 back. "It looked like the shorts were testing the market. There wasn't a lot of urgency in it, maybe they don't believe they'll hold up," one floor trader said. LME zinc inventories rose by 1,700 tonnes after falling by 4,400 tonnes last week. Three months crept higher, ending the kerb $10 firmer at $1,473 per tonne, recovering about a third of its $300 loss last week when it plummeted from a seven-year high of $1,675. Copper tip-toed below $2,300 as stocks rose by 2,800 tonne, but failed to make a convincing go at the downside, finishing $11.50 weaker at $2,298. More serious stabs at the downside are expected after the market failed to challenge $2,400 last week and as stocks keep rising. The cash/threes spread was barely changed at a $28/$33 backwardation. Nickel slid below $7,400, after news that workers at Falconbridge's Sudbury operation went on strike last week failed to excite the market. Analysts said the strike had already been built into prices when the announcement came last Friday and only a long stoppage would affect the market. Prices lost $135 to $7,350. Tin eased $45 to $5,595, off its morning lows, and lead nudged $2 lower to $637.
