Early in the day the December contract rose to 75.15 cents, the high made on July 22, on bullish consumption and sales figures. Trade selling capped the rally, however, and prices lingered just below the recent high. The funds managed to push the contract over resistance in the afternoon and attract additional buying, which set off stops at 75.45 cents and carried the contract to the day's high of 75.70 cents. While market sources were encouraged by today's rally, they said prices are not likely to sustain gains. "Besides good exports and consumption, we're also seeing dryness in the Delta," Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc, said. But rain is forecast for the Delta next week and could pressure prices back to recent levels. The Oct/Dec spread has also failed to widen substantially, suggesting that the market remains technically weak. December closed at a 0.15 cent premium to October, compared with 0.05 cent on Wednesday. The benchmark December contract ended 1.02 cents higher at 75.63 cents a lb, its highest level since closing at 75.80 cents on July 3. The rest of the board settled 0.55 to 1.05 higher. Volume was estimated at 10,000 lots compared with Wednesday's official 4,613 lots. The U.S. Census Bureau put consumption in June at an annualized 10.92 million 480-lb bales compared with a revised 10.88 million bales in May. National Cotton Council economist Mark Lang attributed the strong consumption figures to an increase in apparel purchases and a strong U.S. economy. The U.S. Department of Agriculture put new sales in the new crop at a brisk 183,400 480-lb bales for the week ended July 17. Exports for the week were 156,300 bales. 251021 MET jul 97
