Traders said there were signs of support developing in copper in the $2,375/2,380 area, while spreads, easing earlier, were holding ahead of sensitive July dates. But business was not very active. "All these markets are doing is just ticking over, as nobody really wants to get too involved," one said. Copper prices were below Monday's kerb levels, but little different from the values prevailing in late inter-office trade last night. News that output had completely halted at Portugal's strike-bound Neves Corvo mine was not having a significant impact. Traders ascribed the shrugging off of a potential support prop as a reflection of slow physical offtake and rising stocks. LME stocks rose 2,250 tonnes on Tuesday, having increased by 1,250 tonnes yesterday. More inventory increases are expected, with metal seen being delivered into the U.S., Europe, and the Far East to take advantage of the high premiums for July, they said. July/three months was trading at $141 backwardation, July/August at $99, while July/week was indicated at $47. By comparison, beyond the tight dates, August/September was a less intense $25/26. Final three months business on the kerb was at $2,382, down $17 a tonne from Monday's kerb close. Trends elsewhere were generally dull, and mostly a reflection of copper movements. Aluminium confirmed Monday's downside break, and again lost ground, ignoring a 3,150-tonne stock fall. There is little consumer interest at present, and speculators are holding off against a background of deteriorating technical signals. Last trade was at $1,575, a $12 loss. Zinc flipped under $1,450 at one stage, but uncovered some support, and after flipping off the low continued to consolidate well below recent highs. Last trade was at $1,455, down just $1. Nickel was the only exception this morning, with short-covering lifting the market back up to $6,890, up $30. Lead hardly moved within a tight range, and was $4 softer at $650.
