The market attracted local shortcovering after the December contract eased on the open but managed to hold above its lifetime low of 73.20 cents reached on Monday. A move over nearby resistance at 72.10 cents triggered buy stops and brought in speculative shortcovering, which carried the market to the day's highs. Fund selling on the close knocked the market off the highs and back toward the middle of the day's range. The December contract ended 0.77 cent higher at 74.24 cents per lb, having ranged from 74.95 to 73.25 cents. The rest of the board finished 0.78 to 0.40 cent higher. Traders said the weekly spec-hedge report had a positive effect on prices. The report, released before the open, showed the speculators to be holding a 14.8 percent net short position as of July 11 compared with a 38.2 percent net long position the previous week. "The report was definitely bullish," a trader said. Some industry sources cited talk of flooding in China but floor sources said today's gains were not made on the rumor. "(Flooding) could make this thing run but right now we need to get confirmation and numbers," a trading source said. "Until that comes in, we just don't know. It probably hasn't been priced into the market yet." Analysts expect the market to drift in a range between 75.00 cents and 72.00 cents basis the December contract, in the near term. An estimated 20,000 lots changed hands on the day compared with Monday's official 8,554 lots. 161032 MET jul 97
