Spot July cotton settled 0.23 cent weaker at 73.15 cents per lb, traded 73.45 to 72.90 cents. Most-active December went out 0.17 cent lower at 76.02 cents. Volume was estimated at 11,000 lots compared with Thursday's official 17,065 lots. "The market ended the week fairly well and I would look for the market to test the upside of the range from a technical aspect," a trader said. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Friday set a one-year allowable residue level for the weed-control pesticide bromoxynil on cotton commodities which are used on some animal feeds. The National Cotton Council of America said in a statement issued Friday that Latin America now accounts for 25 percent of U.S. raw cotton exports, or 1.2 million bales in 1996/97, with commitments at 1.7 million bales. "That is some serious momentum, but there is potential for more growth," the Council said. Following from this, the U.S. cotton industry is sending an executive delegation to meet with textile manufacturers in Brazil, Colombia and Ecuador on June 17-26. 161035 MET jun 97
