An early move over resistance at 73.50 cents a lb in July delivery attracted additional shortcovering, which carried the contract to the day's high of 73.70 cents. The trade emerged as a seller and blunted the rally, but prices held most of their gains by the close. Resistance was pegged at 73.90 cents, the high reached on June 2, and then at 74.10 cents, where traders expect to uncover buy stops. July cotton contract closed 1.12 cents higher at 73.64 cents after trading from 73.70 to 72.80 cents. New-crop December went out up 1.19 cents at 76.15 cents. USDA June supply and demand report, released Thursday at 0830 EDT, is not expected to show any revisions to the U.S. crop, analysts said. They expect USDA to lower its estimate of China's ending stocks and Argentina's crop, and raise its estimate of Australia's crop, for the 1996/97 season. May's report pegged the U.S. 1997/98 cotton crop at 18.5 million 480-lb bales. Exports were seen at 7.3 million bales, and ending stocks at 4.25 million bales. A brisk 20,000 lots were estimated to have changed hands on the day, compared with Tuesday's official 10,489 lots, NYCE said. 121016 MET jun 97
