July cotton closed down 0.25 cent at 72.12 cents per lb, having traded from 72.60 to 71.90 cents. New crop December went out 0.31 cent lower at 74.74 cents. Volume was estimated at 10,000 lots, compared with Friday's official 15,569 lots. Dealers said the market is likely to remain cautious ahead of Thursday's monthly supply and demand data, although no changes are expected from last month. The U.S. Department of Agriculture put the crop at 18.5 million 480-lb bales. Exports were seen at 7.3 million bales, and ending stocks at 4.25 million bales, in the May report. The USDA will release its June report Thursday at 0830 EDT. The current data suggest that supply should outpace demand and have put pressure on the market amid a dearth of bullish news, analysts said. Prices are likely to remain under pressure in the coming weeks but could get a boost from the cold weather that has blanketed the cotton belt, over the longer term. "Ultimately, the cool weather will show up in the form of lower yields," Sharon Johnson, an analyst with Frank Schneider and Co Inc, said. "Cotton needs hot weather to grow." The July contract is expected to find support at 72.00 cents and then 70.00 cents. Firm resistance remained at 74.10 cents in July. 100959 MET jun 97
