After the pre-market business established ranges, prices fell back into a relaxed mood after the long weekend and showed little inclination to stray. Three months aluminium stabilised around the $1,650 mark during ring trading after a surge of speculative buying on the pre-market pushed prices to a high of $1,658. It finished the morning kerb $13 higher at $1,646. Light selling from mixed quarters came in at the highs, and prices were expected to consolidate in a range between $1,640 and $1,660, traders said. On Friday, the market dived to a low of $1,610, largely on fund selling, but trade buying came in and helped give it a positive close. The market was tight, which was reflected in a contracting cash/threes spread. It came in to a $8 contango during the rings from around $11 on Friday, but came back out to $14/$12 on lending on the kerb. "I think that was just profit-taking," one floor trader said. LME stocks fell by 1,825 tonnes on Tuesday, but the amount of inventories tied up in off-warrant or consignment stocks was greater than previously thought, broker Macquarie Equities said in a commentary. "Recent discussions with traders have suggested that there could be as much as 400,000 tonnes of inventory being financed in the USA and a further 150,000 tonnes in Rotterdam. This is considerably higher than our previous estimates," it said. Copper lost some steam after shooting to a fresh one-year high of $2,530 last week. Prices held to a tight $8 range with a floor at $2,504, and finished the kerb $11 softer at $2,509. "It still looks fairly resilient, holding above $2,500. But I would expect it to consolidate and maybe dip down to around $2,470 this week," one floor trader said. The cash/threes backwardation narrowed by about $10 to $70/$75. Speculative selling, said to be from a U.S. investment bank, pressured nickel below $7,500, but once it made its early move it huddled in a tight range around its $7,440 low, finishing $80 weaker at $7,450. The market seemed to shrug off confrontational noises coming from Inco's huge Sudbury operation ahead of the May 31 labour contract expiry. A mediator was called in over the weekend when the two sides found themselves at an impasse. Next serious support was pegged at $7,400, the trendline, and the recent low at $7,110. The other metals were lacklustre and ended barely changed. Zinc finished $1 firmer at $1,364, tin closed the morning $5 weaker at $5,725 and lead was indicated at $637/8 compared with $633. Alloy was unchanged at $1,500/5. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 27. svibnja 1997. - burza nije radila BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1546 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3845 CINK EL. FFR/100 KG 838 ALUMINIJ FFR/100 KG 1260 SREB.
