Most of the industrial metals started the day buoyant, helped along by Far Eastern demand after the dollar tumbled against the yen, traders said. But the momentum failed to build sufficiently to propel prices over nearby resistance levels and the London Metal Exchange (LME) metals pared gains or fell back by the end of the kerb. In copper, a smattering of two-way business in the rings failed to move the market dramatically one way or another after prices were unable to pierce the April 28 high of $2,407. Eventually three months copper settled off its highs at $2,398, which was still up $8 from Friday. Floor traders said copper had more upside potential, pegging the March 7 high of $2,440 as the next upside target. Cash to threes was little changed at $58/$62 backwardation after flaring out above $60 during the rings. Aluminium identically surged to a high of $1,679 early in the day, only to sag slightly in the rings. It finished the kerb $6 firmer, but at $1,668 it was below the $1,670-$72 resistance area. The latest IPAI producer stocks report, which showed a small rise in March, was shrugged off by the market. "It hasn't really affected the market. You also have the LME stocks declining which provides a counterbalance, so stock figures are bullish and bearish," one trader said. Zinc also disappointed after probing fresh 4-1/2 year highs early on. It rapidly lost cotact with the $1,340 resistance area and drifted to a $6 weaker $1,326. Analysts said zinc looked slightly overbought and may need to drift back and consolidate before pushing higher again. Lead appeared to absorb some of zinc' early strength but rapidly fell back to finish $2 easier at $620. Following a similar pattern as the others, nickel racked up early shortcovering gains, but ran into resistance at $7,900 and turned back. It was last traded at $7,810, down $20, and a move lower could trigger further selling, analysts said. Tin was quiet and last indicated barely easier at $5,860/70, compared to $5,880. Alloy was indicated slightly higher at $1,510/20. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 09. svibnja 1997. - burza nije radila BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1456 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3970 CINK EL.
