"It's painfully slow this morning. They're all stuck in a range," a trader said. The May options declaration later in the day may be partly responsible for holding prices in a tight band, traders said. However, there was no significant open interest at any relevant strike prices and the declaration was expected to proceed uneventfully, they said. As copper stocks spiked up 3,050 tonnes, prices drifted lower to $2,350 a tonne, which was $10 off Tuesday's kerb close and unchanged from the late finish. But three months prices subsequently ticked up to a slightly firmer $2,363, in the centre of the recent $2,320-$2,390 range. Analysts said the recent stocks rise resulted from lending sparked by last week's large backwardation, but deliveries were expected to dry up this week. The cash to threes backwardation was last at $67/$72, little changed from Tuesday's level, but in sharply from last week's high of around $210. Like copper, aluminium took little heed of the latest stock movements. A sizable decline of 6,700 tonnes resulted only in prices ticking up from early morning levels to $1,635/37 per tonne, compared to Tuesday's kerb of $1,632. "It's stuck in a $1,625-$1,640 range for now. We've seen none of the good fund buying that was around last week," a trader noted. Zinc, which had spurted higher on Tuesday on a short-covering rally, was indicated marginally firmer at $1,279/$1,281, compared to $1,277. A stocks drawdown of 1,350 tonnes was supportive but had failed so far to restart Tuesday's rally, traders said. The other metals were mixed but overall very quiet, traders said. Lead was last indicated at $625/$627, compared to Tuesday's $626, after stocks decreased by 250 tonnes. Tin was virtually unchanged at $5,795/10, versus $5,800, as was nickel at $7,485/95, compared to $7,470. Alloy was steady at $1,495/05, versus $1,500.
