Traders said the copper inventory decline prompted some short covering, with prices quickly rising some $10 from little changed levels around $2,415 a tonne. The general perception is that stocks are likely to fall consistently now that the impact of April's mini-squeeze and extremely high backwardations has faded. This should provide the impetus for prices to resume an uptrend that has been slowed by forward sales and challenge the $2,440 level -- the 1997 high. On Tuesday, the market reached as high as $2,437, and possibly may have touched $2,440, some said. Latest business this morning was at $2,426, up $9 from the previous kerb close. Interest elsewhere in the base metals complex was slow to develop, highlighted by aluminium's struggle to break upwards. Stocks declined by 3,175 tonnes, but the market once more failed to generate upside enthusiasm, with technical signals suggesting consolidation. Aluminium was indicated at $1,664/1,666 a tonne, around $5 down from the overnight kerb close. Some light selling was seen in tin, although the market held steady at an unchanged $5,730. Prices are looking to consolidate after the producer sales seen earlier this week, traders added. Nickel gained $10 in light trading, but zinc drifted back $3 to $1,334. Lead was dull at a slightly steadier $624/627, while alloy was stable at $1,520/30. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 14. svibnja 1997. - burza nije radila BAKAR FFR/100 KG 1482 KOSITAR FFR/100 KG 3862 CINK EL.
