NYCE cotton ends off, locals cover shorts on close
NEW YORK, April 15 (Reuter) - NYCE cotton futures settled
weaker but up sharply from the lows as local shortcovering
emerged near the close, dealers said.
Local selling and speculative liquidation pressured spot
May to 71.10 cents a lb, just above support and the contract
low of 70.90 hit last week. A dearth of buying that followed
three straight sessions of gains contributed to early losses,
trading sources said.
While prices managed to blunt sharp losses by the close,
dealers expect the May contract to fall to 70.00 cents in the
near term as supplies are seen ample.
In addition to last week's upward revision of world cotton
supplies by USDA, certificated stocks remain high.
"Everybody wants to know who is going to take all this
cotton?" a trading source said.
Stocks fell slightly from the previous session, but
remained high at 221,862 bales as of Monday.
Spot May finished 0.60 cent lower at 71.76 cents after
trading from 72.50 to 71.10 cents. July went out 0.64 weaker
at 73.40 cents.
Volume was estimated at 16,000 lots compared with Monday's
official 11,717 lots and ahead of Wednesday's spec/hedge data.
The weekly report is expected to show a rise in
speculative short positions. Friday's CFTC Commitment of
Traders report indicated that speculators held 24,017 short
positions and 8,244 long positions in week ended April 8.
Dealers said the report could lend near-term support to
prices. Resistance in May was pegged between 72.50 and 73.00
cents.
Open interest in May fell 2,542 lots to 25,695 lots as of
Monday's close. Open interest in July climbed 1,084 lots to
24,277 lots.
