Copper flirted occasionally with levels below $2,250 after jerking lower during the pre-market, aluminium fell through $1,560, triggering some sell-stops, while nickel sped lower against a background of crumbling fundamentals, they said. "It has been nothing to write home about - the pricing hardly mattered, and they (markets) just look as if they are going to continue trending down," one trader said. Latest warehouse stock data had no real impact, as the market is now becoming used to daily inventory figures. Copper volume was light, even in the official rings when cash bids met little selling interest. Having extended Friday's declines, the pressure is on the downside, although speculative covering detered a larger price fall. By the end of the kerb, three months prices were at $2,252 a tonne, a $20 loss from Friday's kerb close. Aluminium gave way under the $1,560 chart level, with cash pricing momentarily preventing the decline being hastened before the stops were hit. Last kerb trade was at $1,548, down $16, with a test of $1,535 likely. Nickel was again hit by liquidation and stop-loss sales, with inventories expected to continue rising in the short-term due to Russian arrivals in Europe. The market closed the kerb at $7,125, a $125 loss from Friday. Lead was one exception to the general trend, with prices edging back above $630 on corrective buying to Friday's slide to 18-month lows. Final business was $7 higher at $624. Tin was the other trend-bucker and also managed a small rally, finishing a slow session $30 higher at $5,660. Zinc activity was subdued, as the market held close to $1,230. Prices were just $1 softer at $1,231. Alloy was indicated at a steady $1,450/55 a tonne. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 11. travnja 1997.
