By midsession all metals, with the exception of a dull lead market, were registering losses, although the pace of trading was slow. A general lack of upside enthusiasm undermined the complex, they said. "There just isn't any volume in copper at the moment, and it does not appear to be going anywhere," one trader said. Three months prices again attempted and again failed to break above $2,380, with the market stalling at $2,385. A downward drift was hastened by some cash offers and lending of the spreads, and by the end of the kerb the market was back at $2,369, an $8 loss from Tuesday's kerb. There is little physical offtake at present, and with China still largely on the sidelines, the market is expected to remain confined to a broad $2,300/2,400 band, with jobbing operations in reality likely to keep the range even tighter. Elsewhere in copper, Tuesday's large option turnover, when some 203,000 lots changed hands, was not seen influencing the market. Traders said the business, which ranged from April to December 1997 was believed to a position switch between two merchant banks and that the position was probably that built up by Sumitomo's Hamanaka during his years as the dominant player in the copper market. Aluminium, meanwhile, came under pressure when the $1,650 level was breached, with speculative selling confirming the downward move. Last kerb business was at $1,632, down $21, and further losses will be sustained if $1,630 gives way. Nickel fell sharply at times, breaching $7,700 and triggering some sell-stops, with last kerb trade at $7,670, down $110. Zinc flattered to deceive, and after turning back from near $1,300 dropped to $1,293, down $6. Tin drifted lower, but trade was lacklustre, and last business was at $5,830, down $15. The lead market, by comparison, held steady and was $2 up from Tuesday at $681. A quiet alloy market was little-changed at $1,540/45 a tonne. FRANCUSKA BURZA - 26. ožujka 1997.
