Merino fleece was mainly cheaper, with 19/20/24 microns 0.5 percent cheaper, 21/22/23m slightly cheaper, and 25m unchanged. Merino skirtings of 19m were slightly dearer, with 20/21/22m generally unchanged, it said. In crossbreds, 26m was unchanged, 27m 0.5 percent cheaper, 28m slightly dearer, 29/30m one percent cheaper and 31m one percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged, locks one percent cheaper and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal buyers with strong support from Western Europe and Taiwan. Of the 25,959 bales offered, 12 percent were passed in. Easter holidays also continued to affect the market with some firms still closed and individuals taking breaks. An encouraging feature was a good call for deliveries which kept up hopes of more new business to come. But there is no sign of willingness to pay higher prices by those at or toward the retail end. Competitive imports are encouraged by strength in sterling and although this also reduced the price of imported wool it fails to make any significant difference by the time manufacturing costs are added. Price as quoted are unchanged to lower, according to individual decisions on whether it is pointless to alter them until world values are tested or whether the latest currency-related calculations should be taken into acount. 041016 MET apr 97
