Merino fleece was mainly cheaper, with 19/20/24 microns 0.5 percent cheaper, 21/22/23m slightly cheaper, and 25m unchanged. Merino skirtings of 19m were slightly dearer, with 20/21/22m generally unchanged, it said. In crossbreds, 26m was unchanged, 27m 0.5 percent cheaper, 28m slightly dearer, 29/30m one percent cheaper and 31m one percent dearer. In cardings, lambs were unchanged, locks one percent cheaper and crutchings unchanged. WI said Japanese interests including China were principal buyers with strong support from Western Europe and Taiwan. Of the 25,959 bales offered, 12 percent were passed in. Prices where changed were lower reflecting sterling's strength against currencies in the main primary markets. Demand is generally quiet but home market orders have been coming through while export orders have been declining. Competition has kept pricing in the home market under pressure although hand-to-mouth demand can bring better prices to thos able to meet it, brokers said. 251045 MET mar 97
