Croatian economy stagnating

ZAGREB, April 2 (Hina) - Croatia's GDP saw zero growth in 2011, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Monday after revising the trade data for the last year. The initial assessment, released in late February, showed 0.2% growth.

According to the revised data, Croatia's GDP in the first quarter of 2011 fell by 1.0% in real terms in relation to the corresponding period of 2010, compared with previous data that showed a decline of 0.8%.

The GDP went up by 0.4% in the second quarter, or half the previous estimate of 0.8%, and by 0.7% in the third quarter, the same as in the previous assessment.

In the fourth quarter, the GDP declined by 0.4% in real terms in relation to the same period of 2010, compared with the initial estimate of a 0.2% decline.

"The latest figures show that the Croatian economy is stagnating, that there is no recovery, and that the country has deep structural problems that are coupled with an unfavourable situation in its surroundings," said Zrinka Zivkovic Matijevic, head of the Economic Research Department at Raiffeisen Consulting.
