SITUATION IN SARAJEVO DESTABILIZED BY SERB RAIDS INTO ARMS DEPOTS

SARAJEVO, Nov 8 (Hina) - Fighting between the Bosnian Army and the Serb force which had erupted last night in northern suburbs of Sarajevo, represented a serious danger for the security in the UN- declared safe area of Sarajevo, a spokesman for UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR), Tim Spicer, told today's press conference. The fiercest clashes had been registered at about 20:15 northwest of the residential area of Dobrinja, he added. The Serb forces used 82-mm mortars during last night's clashes, weapons forbidden in the Sarajevo arms exclusion zone. Serb troops attempted twice to grab pieces of heavy arms from a UN-controlled weapons depot. But, Russian and Ukrainian peace keepers prevented them, he said. Spicer said Serbs had already raided three time in the few last days UN-guarded arms collections sites trying to grab heavy weapons. If such attempts continue they could seriously destabilize the situation in Sarajevo, the UN spokesman stressed. During last night's clashes fire was opened in the Sarajevo Airport area. However, the humanitarian airlift for the Bosnian capital continued this morning, since no shells had hit the runway. Bosnian Army First Corps sources said that ten civilians were wounded in last night's attack of the Serb formations on Dobrinja. Spicer could not confirm the number of the wounded residents. He said two French peace keepers had been wounded later in the night when a hand grenade exploded near their observation post at the Jewish cemetery (in the city centre). He added that it was not known from where the shell could be fired. A lull was reported from the fronts of Trnovo and Mount Treskavica, according to UNPROFOR sources. (hina) mms 081457 MET nov 94
