REFUGEES, SHELTERED AT TURANJ, ATTACK UNHCR WORKERS

KARLOVAC, Oct 2 (Hina) - A serious incident occurred in the Karlovac suburb of Turanj (some 60 km south of Zagreb) on Saturday evening when refugees from Velika Kladusa attacked physically several UNHCR workers handing out to them pamphlets with appeals to return to homes in western Bosnia. The incident resulted in two seriously wounded Moslem refugees. The wounded are now at Karlovac hospital, and one of them is still in critical condition. When the UNHCR worker were physically insulted, Polish peacekeepers tried to protect them and shot in the air. The two Moslem refugees suffered serious injuries during the commotion. The refugees demolished a UNHCR vehicle. The refugees who have been marooned at Turanj for six weeks refusing to return to their homes, understood the pamphlets with UNHCR and UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) guarantees for the safety of the repatriates to Velika Kladusa as a sort of political propaganda. They request talks with the commander of the UN Civilian Police (UNCIVPOL), Hans Lauritsen, and the commander of the UN peacekeepers in Sector North, Joseph Chmiel. The Velika Kladusa refugees accused UNHCR of having one soldier of the Bosnian Army's Fifth Corpse in its vehicle when the incident had occurred. Croatian Police in Karlovac will hold a press conference on this incident on Monday. (hina) mm 021053 MET oct 94
