A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN MEDIA TODAY

ZAGREB, Sep 5, (Hina)- A BRIEF LOOK AT CROATIAN MEDIA TODAY The front page story in today's issue of VJESNIK leads with celeberations of a blessing of a chapel in Ludbreg, 70kms northwest of Zagreb. In 1739 the government of the day promised to build the Ludbreg chapel - but the chapel was built only last year. Zagreb Archbishop Franjo Kuharic, blessed the chapel and addressed a procession of 50,000 people. "A strike, nevertheless" is the the headline of an article in VJESNIK which focuses on the start of a mass education strike affecting Croatian kindergarterns, primary schools and secondary schools. VJESNIK carries an interview with Zagreb Mayor Branko Miksa on the Pope's visit to Croatia. An article by Vlado Rajic in VJESNIK focuses on the establishment of a Human Rights Court in Croatia. A court president and two judges will be derived from the European Union while two judges will be selected from Croatia. Opinions that this would mean EU "outsiders" would be involved in Croatia's internal affairs, were dismissed by Rajic. Rajic said that Croatia was obliged to establish such a court under its existing human rights constitutional laws and under the international conventions it has signed. "Who is on the black list", is a headline reviewing the Government's fight to protect the environment. The other Zagreb daily, VECERNJI LIST, carries the frontpage headline, "Law Grabs Savings" in reference to an article which describes a "legal manouvere" enabling Slovenia to take funds from the Ljubljana Bank. The Bank had branches in Croatia and is now unable to pay Croatian depositors 800 million DEM. Today's VECERNJI LIST carries articles on the education strike affecting kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools. "Without credit there is no change," writes A. Filipovic in an article on Croatia's agricultural production. And according to another ariticle insolvency in the economy was always growing. 051348 MET sep 94
