SARAJEVO, May 31 (Hina) - The UN in Sarajevo today confirmed that
at least one UN vehicle seized by Serbs had been sighted in
downtown Sarajevo yesterday.
According to military spokesman Col. Gary Coward, guards
standing at the entrance to Gen. Smith's residence saw a French
armoured vehicle with the same license plates as the vehicles that
were now in Serb hands. According to as yet unconfirmed reports,
several other stolen vehicles were sighted this morning in central
Sarajevo.
Coward said additional security measures had been introduced
to prevent confusion. The description and license plates of all
stolen UN vehicles had been forwarded to the Bosnian army, which
was now entitled to stop and search all UN vehicles and verify the
passengers' identity. Additional security measures were also
introduced at all UN checkpoints on access roads to Sarajevo.
Last week, Bosnian Serbs seized six light UN tanks and 16
APCs. Another seven APCs were taken from British peace-keepers in
Gorazde.
Moreover, in the past few months, Karadzic's men had
accummulated a nice hoard of jeeps, trucks and other vehicles
captured at UN checkpoints. With such a motor pool, they would be
able to create considerable confusion among UN peace-keepers.
According to the latest UN reports, the Serbs were now holding
220 peace-keepers prisoner and another 107 were surrounded. Twelve
Ukrainian and eight British soldiers, as well as a large number of
unarmed observers, were unaccounted for.
