SARAJEVO, May 28 (Hina) - UNPROFOR Commander in Sarajevo, Gen.
Herve Gorbillard, yesterday called for NATO air strikes against
Serb positions because of Serb threats to peace-keepers manning
artillery depots around Sarajevo, the UN in Sarajevo said today.
According to spokesman Alexander Ivanko, Gen. Gobillard was
prompted by the fact that French peace-keepers were in danger of a
direct Serb attack. But air strikes were dropped after
consultations with UN Force Commander, Gen. Bertrand Janvier.
Ivanko warned that the deteriorating situation in Bosnia
called for a high-level political decision. Intensive consultations
were underway and the UN peace-keepers in Sarajevo were expecting
detailed instructions on how to act in the next two to three days.
"If the international community wants to take a harder line
with the Serbs, then we must have political support all the way,"
Ivanko said.
