PAKRAC, May 25 (Hina) - Croatian Government minister Ivan Majdak
and U.N. special rapporteur on human rights, Tadeusz Mazowiecki,
met yesterday in Pakrac in the newly-liberated western Slavonia.
After the talks which lasted several hours, Mazowiecki said
that he would post an envoy in Croatia, who would supervise the
situation in the region, especially in the area of education.
Minister Majdak explained that the official decision of the
Croatian government was to allow all Serbs who left the area to
return freely to Croatia, Mazowiecki said.
We also discussed what should be done to involve Serb
residents in the work of local administrative bodies, Mazowiecki
said.
"The talks have been very open and we are in agreement on many
issues," Majdak said.
Asked whether he was going to visit the Banja Luka area to
look into the human rights situation, Mazowiecki said he would be
glad to do it, but had not yet been given permission for the visit.
He also said he was very worried about the situation in that
area. A couple of days ago he had sent a report on human rights in
Banja Luka to the UN. He was aware, he said, of dramatic actions
taken by Banja Luka Bishop Franjo Komarica (who is on a hunger
strike).
"I am keeping abreast of the situation in the Banja Luka
region and Serb authorities don't like it", he concluded.
