ZAGREB, May 8 (Hina) - Around 500 people gathered in Zagreb's
Square of Croatian Great Men yesterday evening for an unofficial
celebration of Victory in Europe Day.
The celebration was organized by the Committee of the Action
for Victims of Fascism Square, a civic opposition group campaigning
for the square to be given back its former name.
The Committee activists reiterated their demand that the
former name be given back.
The gathering was also addressed by representatives of the
Anti-Fascist Veterans Alliance, the Croatian Helsinki Committee for
Human Rights, the Zagreb Jewish Community and some opposition
parties.
"Neo-Nazism and xenophobia are reawakening throughout the
world, threatening to reenact the most dreadful chapters of our
history", Jewish Community President Ognjen Kraus said.
Kraus recalled the demolishing a synagogues in Germany,
desecrating of Jewish cemeteries in France, as well as some
alarming occurrences of neofascism in Croatia.
