SARAJEVO, April 10 (Hina) - Twelve 120mm mortar shells were fired
last night at the Sarajevo downtown from the Spicasta Stijena
ridge, a Serb position north-east from the city. The UN Protection
Force investigation confirmed that two persons were killed, and
another five wounded, the UNPROFOR in Sarajevo reported today.
The UN commander in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Gen. Rupert Smith met
this morning the Bosnian Federation Vice President Ejup Ganic, to
consider the latest developments.
Meanwhile Gen. Smith's staff issued a statement explaining why
there had been no more resolute NATO response last night. The
mortars from which the fire was opened had been located inside the
inhabited area, and NATO strikes could have thus imperiled the
civilians, the statement said. But NATO was continuing its
reconnaissance mission over Bosnia, Smith stressed.
UN spokesman Alexander Ivanko recalled that any future attack
at Sarajevo could provoke a retaliation that would include strikes
not only at the exact points from which the fire was opened, but
also at other targets around the city. Ivanko declined to comment
on details of current NATO air mission over Sarajevo, saying that
the operation was exclusive in the scope of the Western alliance.
UN peacekeepers in Sarajevo have taken reinforced measures, in
order to find out the positions the fire would possibly be opened
from again. The Serbs were delivered only a formal protest.
