SARAJEVO, March 8 (Hina) - Fierce clashes in western Bosnia were
still raging in the surroundings of Velika Kladusa where the troops
loyal to the local warlord, Moslem separatist Fikret Abdic, and
Serb rebels from occupied Croatian areas were carrying out new
infantry attacks on the positions of the Bosnian Army.
Abdic's troops and Serb forces were trying to break through
the Bosnian Army's 5th Corps' defence lines toward Mala Kladusa.
UNPROFOR officials were not allowed to move in the crisis
area, but UNPROFOR sources in Sarajevo today said no considerable
changes of the front lines had occurred on the battlefield.
The commander of the UN peace keepers in western Bosnia,
Canadian Brigadier Lemieux, was still blocked in the base of the
Bangladeshi UN battalion in Velika Kladusa. Brigadier Lemieux was
prevented by Abdic's followers from returning to the headquarters
in Coralici under the pretext that his passage would be insecure
because of the severe fighting. A supply convoy for the 'blue
helmets' had been returned toward the Maljevac crossing point under
the same pretext.
The Bihac battlefront was rather calm where UN military
observers recorded just one detonation and sporadic small arms fire
in the last 24 hours.
