ZAGREB, Feb 9 (Hina) - Turkey respected Croatia's decision to
terminate the UNPROFOR current mandate, because it held that the
UNPROFOR mission had been wrongly defined both in Croatia and in
Bosnia, the chief of a Turkish parliamentary delegation, Kemal
Mimaroglu, said today after the talks with Croatian Parliament's
leaders. The Turkish delegation was paying a two-day visit to
Croatia.
Mimaroglu believed that the mission of the UN forces in
Croatia and Bosnia should be peacemaking rather than peacekeeping.
The Turkish delegation, called " A Special Study Group for
Bosnia-Herzegovina", was received by the Croatian Parliament's
Speaker, Nedjeljko Mihanovic, this morning. Afterwards the Turkish
delegates met Zarko Domljan, the head of the parliamentary Foreign
Affairs Committee, and other members of the Committee.
The Study Group which included seven parliamentary members and
three officials at the Turkish Assembly and three senior officials
of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, are to depart for Sarajevo and
Zenica from Croatia.
The aim of our visit was to gain an insight in the situation
on the ground and show that Turkey was trying to contribute to
finding peaceful and just settlement to the crisis in the area,
Mimaroglu said at a joint press conference he held with Domljan
after one-hour talks.
Domljan stressed that Milosevic's conduct had been crucial for
the resolution of the crisis in the former Yugoslavia from the very
beginning and said the war would cease when Serbia relinquished its
aggressive and expansionist policies.
He added that such policies must be defeated by either
military or political means.
By cancelling the UNPROFOR mandate Croatia wanted to "exert
pressure on rebel Serbs to abandon aggression and to recognize
Croatia as their State," Domljan said.
We asked the international community to join us in the
pressure on the Serb insurgents, he said.
