34 VEHICLES STOLEN FROM UNHCR IN 1994 AND 1995

ZAGREB, Jan 6 (Hina) - Thirty-two UNHCR vehicles have been stolen in the past year in the former Yugoslavia, Zagreb UNHCR headquarters said today. The theft of vehicles was already continuing in 1995, with a car stolen in Split (southern Croatia) and another vehicle stolen in Medugorje (Herzegovina) in the last five days, UNHCR spokesman Peter Kessler said. An unsuccessful attempt at stealing a car was reported on New Year's Day in Medugorje when an armed person tried to steal a UNHCR car but failed as the car managed to take off. The largest number of UNHCR vehicles were stolen in Croatia and the Croat-controlled part of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kessler said. Last year, ten UNHCR cars were stolen in Croatia, one in a UN protected area, and seven in Croat-controled areas in Bosnia. The UNHCR was robbed of ten vehicles in Serbia and five in Serb-held parts of Bosnia. None of the stolen vehicles has been returned. (hina) jn vm sd 061518 MET jan 95
