ZAGREB, 28 Nov (Hina) - The President of the Croatian Pensioners' Union, Juraj Ivankovic, stated that the number of pensioners who took part in a rally which took place on 23 November in Zagreb, was beyond expectation. Some 15,000
pensioners gathered at Zagreb Sports Square. 'The meeting was peaceful but loud, the way we expected it to be. I am sorry that representatives of Croatian authorities did not attend the meeting to hear what we had to say', Ivankovic told a press conference on Thursday.

The Pensioners' Union had formally asked for a meeting with
Parliament President and Prime Minister in order to inform them
about their requests. The Union demanded from Parliament
representatives to oppose the proposed state budget for 1997 as
well as the adoption of a new law on pension insurance until
pension allowances were harmonized with salaries in line with the
current law, Ivankovic said.
Unless pensioners found understanding for their problems in
Croatia, they would ask European institutions for help, said Ivan
Maricic, member of the Union's Presidency.
